Statement — Minister Kenney issues statement recognizing National Acadian Day

Ottawa, August 15, 2013 — The Honourable Jason Kenney issued the following statement to recognize National Acadian Day:
 

“Let us join Acadians today, as they celebrate their rich culture and heritage on National Acadian Day.

“The Feast of the Assumption was first chosen for the celebration of National Acadian Day in 1881, during the National Convention of Acadians in Memramcook, New Brunswick, in recognition of the cultural continuity of Acadians with Canada’s Royal French heritage. This choice was also made in order to affirm that the history and nationality of Acadians was distinct from that of other French Canadians, who celebrated their heritage on June 24th, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist.

“Throughout their history, Acadians have shown perseverance and great strength. During the “Great Upheaval” between 1755 and 1763, Acadians were able to preserve their heritage, religion and language, in the face of extreme hardship.

“I encourage all Canadians to reflect on the Acadian contribution to the rich historical depths of Canadian culture, and I wish everyone celebrating a happy National Acadian Day.”
