Hi

Could a master record be created for the electronic version of "Info Source" specifically the titles that share the GOC catalogue number BT51/3-1-yyyy

Beginning with the year 1999-2000 and continuing? There are cdroms up to 2008, the current version is at http://www.infosource.gc.ca/emp/emptb-eng.asp (and should have a catalogue record too).

Here are two sample dsp records

Good afternoon Caron,

We were able to locate, in PDF, the following issues:
2001-2002, and 2003-2004 to 2006-2007. It would appear that the publication became HTML only with the 2008 issue. Therefore, we will be unable to catalogue the 2013 issue you linked to as it is not available in PDF.

The issues mentioned above will be added to the cataloguing work queue and consolidated under our existing master records here:

BT51-3/1F-PDF

Hi,

I noticed that the DSP has the print, but not electronic, information for the following:

What's Happening at Colomac?
http://publications.gc.ca/pub?id=327183&sl;=0

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada has this title in pdf linked from
http://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/1100100023141/1100100023143.

Could you add the e-record to the DSP collection.

There are several others in this series but the e-version appears to be represented along with the print.

Thanks,

Carla

There appear to be a few others missing:

What's Happening in In the Sahtu Settlement Area? http://publications.gc.ca/pub?id=421206&sl;=0
is also available electronically from the publications list at http://tinyurl.com/nzlx6aq.
The direct link for 2012 is: http://tinyurl.com/pg7kja7

Might be worth looking at the others on this page to confirm the DSP has captured all of the e-versions?

Hi there,

As of January 28, 2013, we received the following information from the DSP:

A date for the end of the print edition of the Weekly Checklist has not been finally decided. However, once DSP ceases to distribute hard copy publications (on or before March 31, 2014), it will no longer be required for that purpose.
But since we received 4 issues of the Weekly Checklist (28 to 31), with absolutely no hard copy publications, I am wondering if I have missed some information about these type of publications no longer being distributed by the DSP ?

Good day Elaine,

We have not stopped cataloguing or distributing hard copy publications yet.

All four weekly checklists you mention contain some hard copy publications, though only Weekly Checklist 13-31 contains checkbox items.

The infodep message below details the reasons for the lack of checkbox item s present on Weekly Checklists 13-29 and 13-30.

Subject: infodep Link to a Statistics Canada Publication

Hello,

I'm searching for the original 2007 edition of the 2006 Census Dictionary.

I thought I had landed on the correct publication in searching the Governm ent of Canada Publications website : http://www.publications.gc.ca/site/eng/306201/publication.html

The record clearly indicates 2007 as the date, although the link offered, to the Statistics Canada website, leads to the 2010 edition. I can't quite figure out if the message appearing in the "Archived Content" box of the catalogue record explains this, or is saying that the link should indeed lead to the original version of the publication.

Is it possible to obtain access to the 2007 edition?

Thank you,

Glen Gagnon

Subject: infodep RE: Link to a Statistics Canada Publication

Hello,

The link offered in our catalogue record leads to the same Statistics Canada product in HTML that the agency may keep updating. At the moment, the HTML edition, accessible on statcan website, of the 2006 Census dictionary is the 2008 version ("Modified on February 14, 2008").
http://www12.statcan.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/dict/index-eng.cfm

Since the HTML edition of any statcan publication is not hosted on the DSP server, we are unable to keep earlier version(s).

There is a "View the most recent version" link (on the above webpage) that indeed leads to the 2011 Census website.

The PDF edition of the 2006 Census dictionary is a 2010 product.
According to our records, the agency requested ISBNs for it in Dec. 2009, the product was first released in Jan. 2010 then updated in July 2010.

There appears to be three issues of Industry Canada's publication State of the Nation in electronic format for the years 2008, 2010, and 2012. On the Publications of Canada website, the 2012 issue is listed as a periodical and the other two years are listed as monographs. Right now the 2012 issue has the Master Record designation, but it contains only the 2012 issue. Is it possible to add the 2008 and 2010 issues to the Master Record? Thanks,

Thanks for this update, Graeme. Which departments or organizations in Schedules I, I.1 and II are "excluded by specific acts, regulations or orders in council"? Also, are *all* organizations listed in Schedules I, I.1 and II included or only the *departments*?

Subject: infodep RE: Procédures sur l'édition / Procedures for Publishing

Hi Amanda,

Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to say which departments and agencies are excluded. You would have to look at their enacting legislation to determine that. However, of the departments/agencies listed in Schedules I, I.1 and II, there are likely very few that are excluded.
The list of organizations in Schedules III to VII is probably more useful in determining who does not have to follow the procedures.

On the other hand, even if the procedures do not apply to an organization, that is not to say that we do not have their publications in our catalogue.
It just means that they are not obligated to follow the procedures. For example, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited are both Schedule III organizations, but we have quite a few of their publications in our catalogue.

With respect to the use of the word "departments", I've been informed by a representative at TBS that from their perspective, when policies fall under the FAA, "department" refers to the institutions in schedules I, I.1 and II of the FAA. If you look in the FAA definitions section (under "2 – Interpretation"), it lists all of the entities that are considered "departments" for the purposes of the act.

Hope that helps,

Graeme

JUNE 26, 2013 RELEASE: 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) - Education and Labour

Wednesday, June 26, 2013, 8:30 a.m. (Ottawa time), sees the official release, via the Internet, of the second set of data and analyses from the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS). Today's release focuses on education, labour, place of work, commuting to work, mobility and migration, and language of work.

These data and analyses can be accessed through a variety of gateways:

  • Users can enter through The Daily.
  • Users can click on the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) link in the 'Features' section of the Statistics Canada web site home page (bottom–right corner) or enter through the various postings within 'NHS news' or directly from the variety of links on the 2011 NHS web site home page.

Information within the web site is organized into broad display/product categories, featuring analytical, data and reference product headings in the centre. The right-hand side of the home page presents NHS by geography (ability to search the NHS Profile), NHS by topic and the NHS video centre.

Analytical products offer links to the two analytical documents (Education in Canada: Attainment, Field of Study and Location of Study and Portrait of Canada's Labour Force) and the three NHS in Brief articles (The educational attainment of Aboriginal peoples in Canada; Commuting to work and Language use in the workplace in Canada).
The topic of mobility and migration is not covered in the analytical products being released today with the exception of a section on mobility of the workforce in the Portrait of Canada's Labour Force analytical document. Information on mobility and migration is, however, available within data products.

NHS Focus on Geography Series also provides data and highlights on key topics found in the 2011 NHS analytical documents and NHS in Brief articles for various levels of geography.

Thematic maps are also available with this release for various levels of geography and present information for education and commuting to work.

Data products offer education and labour information for a wide range of standard geographic areas, available in the NHS Profile, NHS Data Tables and the NHS Focus on Geography Series.

Please note that data at the census tract (CT) level of geography are now available within the NHS Profile (only) for content associated with the first NHS release (May 8 - Immigration and Ethnocultural Diversity and Aboriginal Peoples) and today's release (June 26 - Education and Labour).

Users can access XML versions of the NHS Profile and NHS Data Tables from the Treasury Board's 'Open Data Portal,' along with the provision of the additional XML file download option available within the NHS web site.
Reference products and other reference materials cover various aspects of the NHS and are intended to support the use and understanding of NHS data and analyses. Specifically with this release, reference products include the updated National Household Survey Dictionary and four reference guides: labour; education; journey to work and mobility. In addition, the Languages Reference Guide, Catalogue no. 99-010-XWE2011007 (released May 8, 2013), has been updated to include language of work. Please note that the geographic area suppression lists have also been updated to include census tracts (CTs) and all lists now reflect the 'reason(s) why' an area was suppressed (i.e., data quality, confidentiality, incompletely enumerated Indian reserves and settlements, etc.).

The 2011 NHS web site home page also promotes/presents:

  • 'Did you know…' rotating highlights featuring the release (based on the analytical documents).
  • Promotional link within 'NHS news' to the upcoming 'Chat with an expert' live chat session scheduled for June 28, 2013.
  • Video centre – contains links to the brief national portrait videos for this release.
  • 'Stay connected' – links to Statistics Canada's social media initiatives.

We hope this information will help you through today's release of the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) – Education and Labour information.

Thank you.

Merci.

Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 8:30 a.m. (Ottawa time), sees the official release, via the Internet, of the first set of data and analyses from the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS). Today's release focuses on immigration, citizenship, place of birth, language, ethnic origin, visible minorities, religion and Aboriginal peoples.

These data and analyses can be accessed through a variety of gateways:

NHS Focus on Geography Series also provides data and highlights on key topics found in the 2011 NHS analytical documents and NHS in Brief articles for various levels of geography.

Data products offer immigration and ethnocultural diversity, and Aboriginal peoples information for a wide range of standard geographic areas, available in the NHS Profile, NHS Data Tables and the NHS Focus on Geography Series.

Users can access XML versions of the NHS Profile and NHS Data Tables from the Treasury Board's 'Open Data Portal,' along with the provision of the additional XML file download option available within the NHS web module.

Reference products and other reference materials cover various aspects of the NHS and are intended to support the use and understanding of NHS data and analyses. Specifically with this release, reference products include the National Household Survey Dictionary, National Household Survey User Guide and six reference guides: Ethnic Origin; Languages; Place of Birth, Generation Status, Citizenship and Immigration; Visible Minority and Population Group; Religion and Aboriginal Peoples.

The 2011 NHS web module home page also promotes/presents:

Thank you.

Subject: infodep GOC pdfs via form requests

Hi there. Having to request GOC publications in pdf format via an online request form is becoming more common (see example, below). How are you dealing with these pdfs in your library?

Is anyone putting them in their institutional repository (IR)? While this seems like the most obvious solution (to me), it is inefficient to have more than one institution adding the same report to their IRs if it is then made openly accessible via that IR. (As an aside, there doesn't seem to be access restrictions on these pubs.)

Comments? Ideas? Any chance the DSP might be able to pick these up and provide access via their catalogue?

There the APLIC portal to check too
http://aplicportal.ola.org/.

Many parliamentary/legislative libraries collect GOC e-publications and DSP adds their e-collection to this portal too.

Thanks for the reminder, Yvonne. APLIC is a wonderful database. Would federal government publications that are not freely available online be accessible via APLIC? That is, are legislative libraries downloading and providing access (via their own servers) to federal government pdfs that have to be requested via a form? Or would APLIC entries be pointing to the DSP's e-archive copy (i.e., if the DSP was able to acquire a copy)?

If legislative libraries are downloading and making federal government pdfs accessible (yay!) then what is a reasonable expectation for lag time and who is collecting what areas? For example, the HC report noted earlier is not retrieved in APLIC via a simple title search (although it is in the DSP catalogue (for information only)). It was published in 2012.

So we have a growing situation where pdf's are not being created and so cannot be captured in the DSP ecollection. We have to figure out who (Treasury Board?) provides the rules whereby dept's can chose to create or not pdfs, and create some understanding the without pdf's listing in the DSP ecollection, a service for Canadians, does not happen. This leaves individual institutions creating collections for Canadians using either tools like Archive IT for bulk harvesting, or one-off individual captures in IR's

I don't know if the Cdn Public policy collection captures more than just pdf's, I'll ask them.

As significant as the subject matter of these documents may be, they are both marked as "Interim" and "Draft for Discussion". Because our electronic collection is permanent, it is our policy not to include such documents (i.e., "drafts) because it is probable that we will be asked to remove them and replace them with the final editions when produced.

MARCH 26, 2013 RELEASE: 2011 CENSUS WEB MODULE 'WRAP UP' HOME PAGE

The 2011 Census Dissemination Project is pleased to announce the official release of the 2011 Census web module 'wrap-up' home page.

The 2011 Census web module home page has been updated to present information from all four of the 2011 Census major releases. It continues to conform to the recently revised Government of Canada's website standards with the new layout and design.

The 'wrap-up' home page continues to provide links in the left-hand side bar to key products/services. The centre portion promotes 'Census news'; presents quick links to the 2011 Census Profile and below that, users will find the new '2011 Census analytical highlights' section which displays analytical highlights from all four releases on a random/refreshed basis. Our right-hand side bar now includes the new 'Featured place' – delivering map and 2011 Census data highlights for all census subdivisions (CSDs) with a total population of 5,000 plus. Again, this feature refreshes randomly each time a user accesses the web module. Below this, users will continue to find links to the featured video and products from the 2011 Census.

The 2011 Census Profile functionality has also been updated to include a 'Related data' tab. This will now provide users with the ability to obtain related data found in applicable 2011 Census data products for the areas presented based on the user's selection. Please note only the most popular tabular products (i.e., Topic-based tabulations, Highlight tables) are presented.

Thank you.

Merci.

Subject: infodep Problem accessing PDF files

Hi,

I have been having difficulty accessing PDF files for some time. When I try to download a PDF document it reroutes me to the Web Archive screen; after clicking on the "Continue to PDF" button I am sent to a 302 error page. The page states that "The document has been moved here", and when I follow the link to the document it simply reroutes me again to the Web Archive page. And so the cycle continues. There is no consistency with browser type or version, firewall, device, etc.; only that I receive the message – 303 error "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) Server at publications.gc.ca Port 80". I would provide examples, but again, there appears to be no consistency; sometimes the link works and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to have started after the Web archive page was added.

Has anyone else had this problem?
If so, please share a solution; if not, can someone from Publications Canada contact me directly?

Regards,

Jodie Gladman
