Yukon Health Card

The Yukon Health Care Insurance plan provides coverage for medically required hospital and medical services, and certain dental-surgical procedures. The cost of providing these services to Yukoners is met through the general revenues of the territory. You pay no premiums.

Please carry your Yukon Health Care Card with you at all times. You must present it to the physician and/or hospital each time you need insured hospital or physician services. This shows you are entitled to receive health care services in the Yukon.

If you are new to the Yukon, please call 867-667-5209 or 1-800-661-0408 (toll free within Yukon), or stop by the Insured Health Services office at 204 Lambert Street (4th floor) in Whitehorse to fill in an application and register with Yukon Insured Health. You must register in person.

In rural communities, application forms are available at all Territorial Agents.

Eligibility

Yukon residents are eligible for the territorially-funded health coverage. To be eligible you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or have immigration status
  • Make your permanent home in Yukon and
  • Be physically present in Yukon and not absent for more than six months, without a waiver from Insured Health Services.

Students must file an “temporary absence” notice for health care to continue while they are not resident in the Yukon.

Yukon Health Care Insurance coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Yukon. Through reciprocal agreements with other provinces and territories, if you are an eligible resident moving to Yukon from another part of Canada, the health insurance of your former province/territory will cover you for up to three months. However, the department strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase additional private health insurance to cover possible needs that are not normally covered by other jurisdictions. This includes ground transportation by ambulance or air medevac.

You will receive a health care card. Your card will be renewed each year on your birthday. If you lose your card, please notify Insured Health Services at 867-667-5209 and a new card will be issued. Family members will also receive a health care card a separate health care number.

Changes to information

It is important to inform Insured Health Services of any changes in information on your card. To report changes such as a change of address, a dependent leaving home, please contact Insured Health Services at 867-667-5209 or 1-800-661-0408, ext. 5209.

Temporary absence from the Yukon

If you are an eligible Yukon resident and you will be away from the territory for more than six months, you will be covered for physician and hospital services only. You are advised to contact Insured Health Services if you will be away from the Yukon for more than two months.

Students in full time attendance at a university or other recognized post secondary institution are covered for physician and hospital services,  provided they return to the territory at least once every 12 months. Yukon health care coverage will end after 12 months of continuous absence unless a waiver is obtained from Insured Health Services.

Coverage while traveling within Canada

All provinces and territories except Quebec have signed an Interprovincial Billing Agreement which provides coverage for insured hospital and physician services. Yukon residents are not eligible for ambulance or air medevac services anywhere outside of the territory. It is strongly recommended that you purchase additional medical insurance to cover these possible expenses. Without insurance you will be billed directly for these costs.

Coverage while outside of Canada

Yukon residents will be covered for insured physician and hospital services at the territorial rates only, in Canadian dollars. The cost of services may be considerably higher outside of Canada and you will be responsible for paying the difference between what Yukon Health Care Insurance covers and the fee charged. You will also be responsible for the full cost of services not covered by the territorial plan. This also includes ambulance transportation or air medevac services.
