Taking Care of Business - Aboriginal Entrepreneurs

From coast to coast to coast, Aboriginal entrepreneurs are building successful companies and creating jobs. According to the 2011 Aboriginal Business Survey, the "number of Aboriginal business owners and entrepreneurs is growing at a rate that far exceeds that for self-employed Canadians overall."

In Chilliwack, British Columbia, Deanna Johnson, who owns Nations Construction Consulting, is a female Aboriginal business leader who has broken the mold, by excelling in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her firm boasts numerous residential and institutional construction projects that are creating jobs for local First Nations people. Nations Construction specializes in new construction, renovations, First Nations housing, First Nations Administration Buildings and First Nations Longhouses. Deanna notes she never expected her business to grow to where it is today, in such a short time. And other members of her community are following suit. Many are now furthering their education and starting businesses of their own.
