Band Moneys

In some cases, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has specific responsibilities for managing moneys that belong to First Nations bands. These moneys are generated through band-owned resources such as oil and gas. The Indian Act outlines AANDC's responsibilities in this area.

First Nation Management of Band Moneys

AANDC is also implementing solutions outside of the Indian Act through the First Nations Oil and Gas and Moneys Management Act. This Act enables First Nations to manage band moneys themselves. These efforts support AANDC's mandate, and the efforts of First Nations peoples to increase control of their economic, political and social affairs in order to improve their quality of life.
