Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) is working with the Province of Manitoba, the Manitoba Association of Native Fire Fighters, Public Safety Canada, Health Canada, the RCMP and other relevant agencies to support First Nations’ flood-related emergency management activities. Specifically, AANDC works with First Nations affected by flooding to determine their needs, develop work plans and fund preparedness, response and recovery measures.

This chart provides a breakdown of the $80.2 million allocated in 2010/11 and 2011/12 for flood preparation, response and recovery for Manitoba First Nations. This funding was used for flood preparedness and response activities to protect infrastructure and property on reserve, such as sand bags, dikes, and cleaning drainage culverts. Of the $80.2 million, approximately $44 million is related to projects (including dikes on 12 First Nations) that may be left in place to provide longer term flood protection.
