2013 Forest Fires in First Nations Communities

AANDC Support for First Nations Affected by 2013 Forest Fires

The Government of Canada recognizes that a number of First Nation communities are at risk of being impacted by forest fires this season. The Government of Canada has been working with provincial officials, First Nation communities and other emergency partners for several months to ensure that First Nations at risk have the resources they need to be as prepared as possible for forest fires.

In particular, the federal government has provided expert advice, support and training directly to First Nations at risk to support forest fires suppression activities. In fiscal year 2012-2013, AANDC provided $56.3 million to fund emergency management services in First Nations on reserve, which includes $16.2 million for forest fire suppression activities.

This season, fire danger remains high across the country. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) will continue to monitor the forest fires situation closely.

For more information about fire protection, AANDC’s roles and responsibilities and funding for fire protection, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions.

For information on current forest fires risk, emergency response and evacuations, please contact the appropriate provincial/territorial emergency response organization.
