Band Advisory Services

Program

The purpose of this program is to provide funding to First Nations not affiliated to Tribal Councils to assist them to independently access band advisory services.

Program History / Background

Support for Band Advisory Services (BAS) is one component of First Nation Government Support Funding Programs. The other components are the Band Support Funding, Band Employee Benefits Program, Tribal Council Program, Professional and Institutional Development.

This program operates under broad authorities provided by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Act and derives its legislative authorities for the activity from annual Parliamentary appropriations and Treasury Board authorities.

Description of Operations

This program is available to larger First Nations with a minimum on-reserve population of 2,000 Status Indians.

Band Advisory Services funding is provided for band management, financial management, community planning, technical services and economic development areas. First Nations who receive this funding are responsible for obtaining advisory services as required in all five categories.

Funding for Band Advisory Services is based on a funding formula. Overhead costs associated with advisory services are provided through the Band Support Funding program.
