Mineral Resources

Our Role

Nunavut's resource potential is outstanding. It is an exciting time for the territory as exploration work increases in all regions. The Mineral Resources division contributes to sustainable mineral resource development on Nunavut's Crown land.

Our Activities

Mineral Resources is integrated with the Environment, Water Resources, Land Administration, and Field Operations divisions; all within the Operations Directorate. This allows for a coordinated approach to resource development in Nunavut, in support of sustainable development.

Specifically, Mineral Resources does the following:

  • ensures compliance with the Canada Mining Regulations;
  • monitors, assesses and reports on mineral related activities in Nunavut;
  • maintains an archive of Nunavut's mineral exploration and mining history available to clients;
  • jointly manages the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office;
  • develops mineral exploration and mining policies while serving as an advocate for sustainable mineral development in the territory;
  • contributes to public awareness through schools, community visits and public events;
  • promotes Nunavut as a premier location for mineral-related investment; and
  • provides technical advice during environmental assessments.
