Office of the Regional Director General and Associate Regional Director General

The Executive area oversees the management of the directorate's within the Alberta regional office. The Regional Director General is responsible for the implementation of the government's initiatives and the department’s program policies. The ARDG along with the RDG deal frequently with First Nations on political, social and other issues and both are involved with internal operational matters. Together with the management team they provide the region with vision and leadership.


Economic Development and First Nation Relations Treaty 6

This directorate provides a comprehensive range of services to First Nations in Treaty 6 through funding agreement management and land stewardship. The directorate also manages economic development programs for First Nations and their entities as well as individuals both on and off reserve.

The Field Services and Indian Moneys units' primary focus is on relationship management with First Nations as the first point of contact for First Nations to access AANDC services. Activities include agreement oversight and management, audit review, capacity development, default prevention and default management.

The Lands and Environment units area of responsibility is to manage land-related statutory obligations under the Indian Act and in accordance with departmental policy, manage the Reserve Land and Environment Management Program by providing advisory services to First Nations in the program and to assist First Nations with environmental management and stewardship of reserve lands.

The Community Economic Development Program provides core financial support intended for community economic development planning and capacity development initiatives. Aboriginal Business Development Program:

The Aboriginal Business Development Program supports business development on a pan-Aboriginal basis by providing contributions to eligible Aboriginal owned for-profit business.


Child & Family Services and First Nation Relations Treaty 7

Overview of Directorate: Responsible for the provision and oversight of regional operations to ensure the effective management and delivery of the department's programs and services for Treaty 7 First Nations (Blood, Piikani, Siksika, Stoney, Tsuu T'ina), their members and their entities (Child and Family Services, Tribal Council, Treaty 7 PTO, and AFOA). Provides oversight for Child and Family Services agencies located in the province, both on and off reserve. Unique to the directorate is the Calgary sub-office, requiring the co-ordination of internal communications and services to ensure the efficacy of operations and services for staff in the delivery of programs and services to Treaty 7 clients. Provides support to regional and national initiatives, input to policy development, and participates in the regional management regime.

Three distinct units make up the CFS and FNR, Treaty 7 Directorate: Field Services, Lands and Environment, and Child and Family Services.

Field Services

First point of contact for First Nations to access AANDC programs and services.

Lands and Environment

Manages land-related statutory obligations pursuant to the Indian Act and departmental policy, and manages the Reserve Land and Environment Management Program by providing advisory services to First Nations in the program.

Child and Family Services (CFS)

Coordinates programs and policies in the areas of Child and Family Services and Family Violence Prevention for the entire province.


Social Programs and First Nation Relations Treaty 8

The Social Programs and First Nations Relations Treaty 8 Unit provides a comprehensive range of services to First Nations in Treaty 8 through funding agreement management, land stewardship and social development programs for First Nations and their entities as well as individuals both on and off reserve.

Lands, Negotiations & Indian Government

The Lands, Negotiation and Indian Government Directorate is a multi-disciplinary organization responsible for the management, implementation and monitoring of programs, initiatives and priorities that support the following AANDC Strategic Outcome areas: The Land, The Government and The People. The work of the directorate links directly to the regional service delivery under a number of AANDC Sectors:

  • Regional Operations (Governance)
  • LED (Lands, Environmental stewardship)
  • RIAS (Individual Affairs Client Services)
  • TAG (Claims, Self-Government)
  • PSD (IGR, Consultation & Accommodation, LMRB)

In addition, the Directorate provides specialized service and advice to support regional First Nation and Intergovernmental Relations (Regional Strategic Partnerships), direct Negotiation services, and other legislative, policy and special initiatives (i.e. oilsands).


Community Infrastructure & Education


Corporate and Funding Services

Corporate and Funding Services oversees the following activities: Financial Allocation and Transfer Payments; Accounting Operations; Data Collection, Processing and Analysis; Records Services; Internal Services; Process and Methods; Informatics; Band Audits and Allegations Managements and Administration and Reception Services.


Communications

The Communications directorate handles media inquiries for the Alberta Region. The unit also coordinates the planning and implementation of communications products and/or activities for the region and some of its First Nations community partners. This includes support to public education initiatives and special events, support to the regional executive office, media monitoring, providing communications advice, managing the regional intranet and internet sites, and preparing publications and other information resources of use or interest to the region and the communities it serves.

Human Resources Services

The Alberta Region Human Resources (HR) Directorate provides a wide array of client services in support of the department meeting its strategic outcomes. The Alberta Region HR Directorate provides vision, leadership, advice and guidance within the Alberta Region, the national AANDC HR community, as well as the interdepartmental Federal HR community.

All program areas within the HR Directorate are responsible for providing strategic advice and guidance, in a partnership context, to support managers and employees of the department. Program areas include organizational design and development, classification, staffing, employment equity, official languages, labour relations, learning and employee development, compensation and benefits, awards and recognition, and HR planning for the Alberta region.
