Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on Canada’s Selection for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards
OTTAWA, September 25, 2013 - I am delighted that the feature film Gabrielle, directed by Louise Archambault and produced by Luc Déry and Kim McCraw of micro_scope, has been chosen as Canada’s candidate for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 86th Academy Awards. The film received funding through Telefilm Canada’s Canada Feature Film Fund, which supports the development and production of feature films that have the potential for success in Canada and abroad.
Canadians can be proud that artists from our country are distinguishing themselves on the world stage and strengthening our reputation for cinematic excellence. Canada’s filmmakers have experienced much success in recent years, and our country’s official candidate for Best Foreign Language Film has gone on to receive a nomination in this category three years running.
On behalf of the Government of Canada and of all Canadians, I wish the team behind Gabrielle the best of luck as the film seeks to become the fourth Canadian production in a row to join the shortlist of nominees for Best Foreign Language Film. I would also like to commend everyone who took part in the Canadian Oscar selection committee’s process.
