Who We Are and What We Do

An average of 97 per cent of the Manitoba Region's budget is spent in the form of Grants and Contributions. These are funds that are transferred by the Manitoba Region directly to First Nations, Tribal Councils, and organizations that provide services to First Nations, like Child and Family Service agencies.

Of the remaining three per cent that goes towards Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) departmental overhead in Manitoba, two per cent goes towards salaries and one per cent towards non-salary expenses, which includes rent, building maintenance and other related costs.

In the Manitoba Region, AANDC's total year-end expenditures were $955.6 million for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Of that amount, $933.9 million - 97.7 percent - went directly to Manitoba First Nations in the form of Grants and Contributions, with the remaining funds going towards departmental overhead.
