Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on federal election in Germany

23 September 2013
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the outcome of the German federal election:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to offer my sincere congratulations to Chancellor Angela Merkel on her party’s re-election in the German federal election yesterday.

“Canada and Germany enjoy a deep and long-standing relationship based on shared values and strong political, economic and social ties.

“Our two countries cooperate closely in the G-8, the G-20, NATO and the United Nations, to promote economic growth, deficit reduction and the free flow of trade, as well as to advance peace, human rights and the rule of law.

“I look forward to working with Chancellor Merkel to further strengthen the bonds between our two great nations.”
