Unity in diversity
Canada’s diversity distinguishes it from most other countries. Its 32 million inhabitants reflect a cultural, ethnic and linguistic makeup found nowhere else on earth.
In the context of citizenship and immigration, there are many things that Canadians and permanent residents of Canada can do.
Sponsor a family member
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) knows it is important to help families who come from other countries to reunite in Canada. If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, you can sponsor your family member to become a permanent resident.
Apply for proof of citizenship
You can apply for a citizenship certificate as proof of citizenship. You might need proof of citizenship to vote, get a passport, get a driver’s licence, get a job or access government services.
Adopt a child
You can adopt a child from a different country. Find out more about the international adoption process.
Sponsor a refugee
Groups and individuals can sponsor refugees from abroad who qualify to come to Canada. Most sponsorships last for one year, but some refugees may be eligible to receive assistance from their sponsors for a longer period of time.
Hire a foreign worker
Employers can hire a foreign worker temporarily or offer a full-time job to support a skilled worker’s immigration to Canada. There are several programs available.
Get a passport
Canadian citizens should have a passport when they travel abroad.
Celebrate being Canadian
Canadians are proud of their citizenship. We value the rights and freedoms of our citizenship as well as the history our values, traditions and institutions are built on. Learn how you can celebrate being Canadian.
