The Targeted Engagement Grant Program will provide non-recurring, financial support, up to a maximum of $25,000, to projects that align with the Department's engagement priorities. These projects can include conferences, roundtables, and workshops, as well as various scholarly activities.

Requests for funding will be assessed primarily on the proposed project's ability to inform, confirm, or challenge current and future defence policy thinking. Several other factors may be taken into consideration, including: its international perspective; historical perspective; and, whether or not it takes a multi-disciplinary approach.

Project applications must

  1. Clearly demonstrate their relevance to the Department's engagement priorities.
  2. Include a proposed agenda.
  3. Provide a proposed list of participants (speakers, researchers and/or others)
  4. Include a proposed budget, including a breakdown of spending by category.
  5. Provide a list of other sources of funding (both obtained and requested). Applicants are encouraged to seek additional sources of funding.

Other criteria:

  1. Funding cannot be used for purposes other than those stated in the proposal.
  2. Funding cannot be used to offset expenses related to honorariums, insurance, interest charges, professional services, capital assets, office related costs, amortization, or to purchase alcohol.
  3. Funds cannot be used to pay for the participation of Government of Canada employees or Canadian Forces members.
  4. The Department of National Defence reserves the right to request receipts and/or other documentation to assess how projects funds are used.
  5. The Department will have the right to participate in events.
  6. Applicants must acknowledge the support of the Defence Engagement Program by providing written recognition in all materials produced and intended for the public.
  7. Unspent funds must be returned to the Department of National Defence by cheque payable to the Receiver General of Canada.
  8. Successful applicants must provide a financial statement and report on how the project met DND/CF engagement priorities within sixty (60) days of the project's completion.
