Louis Stephen St. Laurent (Liberal Party of Canada) held the office of Prime Minister of Canada from November 15, 1948, to June 21, 1957. While in office, Mr. St. Laurent welcomed Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949 and oversaw Canada's involvement in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Before taking office, he was Canada's Secretary of State for External Affairs from 1946 to 1948 and Minister of Justice from 1941 to 1946. Mr. St. Laurent was first elected to the House of Commons in 1942 and prior to that practised law. He was born on February 1, 1882, in Compton, Quebec, and died on July 25, 1973, in Québec City, Quebec.
