30 August 2013
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of the Honourable Senator Claude Carignan as Leader of the Government in the Senate.  The appointment takes effect immediately.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Senator Carignan as the new Leader of the Government in the Senate,” said Prime Minister Harper.  “I am confident that Senator Carignan has the experience, dedication and respect required to increase transparency and accountability in the Senate.”

Senator Carignan fully supports the Government in its efforts to make the Senate more democratic. This includes legislation to limit the term lengths of senators and encouraging the provinces and territories to implement democratic processes to select Senate nominees.

“I look forward to working with Senator Carignan in Parliament on strengthening the economy, keeping our streets and communities safe, celebrating our nation’s rich history, and promoting Canada’s interests on the world stage.”

The Prime Minister also thanked outgoing Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Marjory LeBreton, for her exemplary service to Canada and wished her continued success as she completes her term in the Senate over the next two years.
