To help ease the transition from school to work, Economic Action Plan 2013 proposed an additional investment of $70 million over three years through the Career Focus program to support an additional 5,000 paid internships for recent post-secondary graduates.
This complements a measure in Economic Action Plan 2012 where the Government reallocated $50 million through the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) to connect young people with jobs that are in high demand.
About the Program
YES is the Government of Canada's commitment to help young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition into the labour market.
Who Is Eligible
YES has three programs:
- Skills Link provides funding for employers and organizations to offer eligible activities to youth facing barriers to employment.
- Career Focus provides funding for employers and organizations to create career-related work experiences for post-secondary graduates and supports paid internships for recent post-secondary graduates.
- Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for students between the ages of 15 and 30.
Employers and organizations can apply for funding to offer employment opportunities to young people under the three program streams.
Progress to Date
In 2012, YES helped connect 60,000 Canadian youth with the work experience and skills training needed to succeed in the job market.
