Ottawa, Ontario (June 10, 2009) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of a new Chairperson and two Commissioners for the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

“Our Government is delighted that candidates were recommended unanimously by all parties to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement,” said Minister Strahl. “I would like to thank Justice Frank Iacobucci, in his role as Facilitator of the Selection Committee, and all members of the Committee for their dedication in identifying the new commissioners, and all Canadians who put their name forward for consideration.”

As of July 1st , 2009, the TRC will be chaired by the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair who will be assisted in his work by two commissioners: Marie Wilson and Chief Wilton Littlechild. These individuals bring a depth and mix of personal, academic and professional experiences to the task of listening, documenting and seeking to bring reconciliation to the often painful experiences of residential school survivors. “I am excited that we have three outstanding individuals with passion, vision and commitment who will form a great team and make a rich contribution to the work of this important commission,” said Minister Strahl.

“While it is regrettable that there were setbacks in the first year, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its staff have been hard at work, pursuing endeavours towards the fulfillment of its mandate such as increasing communications and outreach activities, continuing dialogue with parties and survivor organizations,” continued Minister Strahl.

The Government of Canada recognizes that the TRC is an important component of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and is committed to seeing it fulfil its mandate. The Commission is an autonomous body supported by a Secretariat.
