OTTAWA — Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, met with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as part of a continued open dialogue to discuss safe rail transportation.

“The unfortunate tragedy in Lac-Mégantic highlights the need to further strengthen cooperation and redouble our efforts to enhance safety to ensure such incidents never happen again”, said Minister Raitt.

This meeting is only one of many with representatives of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities as part of two-way dialogue and information exchange on railway transportation in Canada.

“The safety of Canadians is Transport Canada's top priority. My department and I recognize the responsibilities of all parties involved in maintaining safe railway transportation in Canada, including provinces, territories, municipalities and industry,” added Minister Raitt. “My department and I continue to work closely with municipalities, provincial governments and industry stakeholders to examine how we can improve railway transportation in Canada”.

Although the cause of the Lac-Mégantic accident remains unknown at this time, Transport Canada continues to collaborate in the ongoing investigations. Railway and transportation of dangerous goods regulations exist to ensure the safety and protection of the public. Should anyone be found to have contravened any federal transportation regulations, Transport Canada will not hesitate to take immediate enforcement action.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities represents 2,000 communities across Canada.
