Provincial employees kicked off their annual United Way fundraising campaign today, Sept. 30, with the goal of raising $600,000.

The 2013 campaign is expanding to include all government employees across Nova Scotia.

"For the first time, we will have a province-wide campaign that supports all six United Ways in the province and the hundreds of community-based agencies and programs across Nova Scotia," said Kevin Malloy, deputy minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "For more than 50 years, provincial government employees have been supporting the United Way and this is an opportunity for them to give back to the communities where they work and live."

Staff from government departments, agencies, boards and commissions come together each year to pledge support for the United Way. Funds are raised through payroll deductions and department events.

This year's campaign is being hosted by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations and Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. Hundreds of employees gathered at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax to enjoy carnival games, including a dunk tank, and entertainment by Mike Hirschbach of Halifax Circus.

"Programs supported by the United Way touch the lives of many Nova Scotians," said David Darrow, deputy minister to the Premier. "Our provincial employees are committed to helping build better communities and they bring enthusiasm to the campaign each year."

The United Way funds hundreds of agencies and programs across Nova Scotia, ranging from afterschool programming, literacy, employment training and family resource delivery. Funds raised by employees will stay in their communities.

"Thanks to the generous donations from provincial employees, United Way helps people face overwhelming challenges by providing programs and resources that change lives and build hope," said Catherine Woodman, president and CEO, United Way Halifax. "We are grateful for their support, allowing us to provide opportunities, strengthen neighbourhoods, increase a sense of belonging, and make healthy, active living a priority."
