Job description:
The McCord Museum is dedicated to the preservation, study and appreciation of Montreal’s history, as recounted by its people, artists and communities living in the city’s past and present. The McCord Museum is home to one of the largest historical collections in North America, consisting of First Peoples objects, costumes and textiles, photographs, decorative and visual artworks, and textual archives, totalling more than 1.44 million artefacts. The McCord Museum produces exciting exhibitions that engage visitors from Montreal, Canada, and beyond by offering them a contemporary look at the world. The McCord Museum also offers educational and cultural activities, as well as innovative projects on the Internet.
The McCord Museum is recruiting a Head, Communications

Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, and working closely with the various teams at the McCord, the Head, Communications plans, manages and oversees the delivery of all of the Museum’s communications. This individual is also supported by and supervises two communications officers and an internal design studio.

Roles and Responsibilities

Planning
- Responsible for developing the annual communications plan as well as individual communications plans for the Museum’s various exhibitions and activities, with help from the team and the Director, Marketing and Communications
- Develop effective communications strategies to reach the Museum’s different target audiences (members, visitors, etc.)
- Participate in the forging of partnerships (media and other), ensure the production of partners benefits, and maintain excellent partner relationships
- Identify the communication needs of the institution and its various teams, and develop appropriate solutions and tools to address these needs
- Oversee the clientele studies and surveys conducted by the McCord Museum
Management and delivery of communications
- Supported by the team, manage the annual communications plan and individual communication plans for the McCord’s various exhibitions and activities, including media and promotional plans, public relations, the contents on the Museum’s Web site, on social media, etc.; manage budgets and deadlines, and prepare the related reports and analyses
- Supervise and support the communication officers in developing communications, promotional and public relations projects for the Museum and in organizing the various events held by the Museum (exhibition openings, special events, etc.)
- Brief agencies and internal resources, and oversee and/or prepare assignments, ensuring that deadlines and budgets are met
- Oversee and ensure the effective use of the McCord Museum’s communications tools
- Manage the communications team
- Manage requests from the McCord’s various departments, and prioritize these requests as required
General
- Assure the payment of invoices, and perform all other administrative tasks as required
- File and archive departmental documents
- Conduct performance reviews of team members
- Assist the Director, Marketing and Communications as required
- Perform any other tasks associated with the Marketing and Communications department as required

Employment Conditions
- Permanent position to start mid-November 2013 / full-time / Occasional work on evenings and weekends;
- Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and generous benefits package , six-month probation period;


Qualifications and profile required

- University degree (bachelor degree in marketing, communication or equivalent)
- Five to 10 years of experience in communications, and 3 years of relevant experience in similar positions
- Fluent in English and French (written and spoken), with excellent French writing skills
- Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe CS Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign), and Web navigation tools. Knowledge of a database analysis application an asset
- Capable of working under pressure and as part of a team
- Capable of managing multiple tasks and defining priorities quickly and efficiently
- Excellent writing and data analysis skills
- Technically skilled and creative; resourceful, dynamic and adaptable; autonomous and versatile
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Rigorous and extremely well organized
- Excellent time and resource management skills (human and financial)
- Creative and highly innovative
- Knowledge of the various media and media representatives; attentive to the latest trends
- Available evenings and weekends when required.
