CFMAS - Installation Instructions

Canadian Forces Artefact Management System Version 3.X

NOTE: LOCAL CONFIGURATIONS AND INSTALLATIONS ARE OFTEN UNIQUE. LOCAL IT SUPPORT STAFF SHOULD BE CONTACTED FOR CLARIFICATION AND FOR ACTION PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION OF ANY SOFTWARE.

CFAMS has been designed to operate on Microsoft's ™ Windows ® 95/98/NT4 and requires the following computer hardware specifications (minimum):

  1. Pentium 166 MHz
  2. 32 MB RAM
  3. 20 MB free Hard Disk Space
  4. SVGA 17” Monitor;
  5. a CD ROM drive.

Prior to the installation of Version 3.0, move/copy the MUSEUM.DB file from its installed location to another location on the hard drive. This is a precautionary measure only (during installation, the setup wizard automatically detects the MUSEUM.DB file. If it finds one in the C:\MUSEUM\DATABASE folder, a window will appear prompting the user to overwrite - CLICK NO).

Next, COMPLETELY UNINSTALL THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF CFAMS (1.X) PRIOR TO INSTALLING 3.X. To uninstall, go to START›SETTINGS›CONTROL PANEL and double click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. In the INSTALL/UNINSTALL tab of the PROPERTIES window, double click on the CFAMS entry.

Once completely uninstalled, and after the MUSEUM.DB file has been moved/copied to another location, begin the installation of Version 3.0.

The CD-ROM has been designed to automatically launch if the computer has the CD-ROM 'Auto Insert Notification' feature configured. If not, either through Explorer or the START›RUN command, type in “D:\Language.exe” (no quotes) where D:\ is the computer's assigned CD-ROM drive letter. The user will be prompted to choose the English or the French version.

Both French and English versions have been included on the Distribution CD-ROM with the release of CFAMS 3.0 but only one can be installed at any given time, as they will both be installed to the same directories. The install wizard will also run in the desired language).

INSTALL EITHER THE FRENCH OR ENGLISH VERSION. DO NOT INSTALL BOTH ON THE SAME MACHINE.

Once installed, CFAMS automatically creates a directory under the root directory, C:\Museum, and three sub-folders:

  1. \Bitmaps: contains application images;
  2. \Database: contains the database file, museum.db, as well as a .log file. The museum.db file is THE file that contains ALL saved entries and is therefore the only file required for back-up purposes. If the host computer does not have a dedicated back-up drive/device (recommended), the back-up utility included in Windows 95/98 should be used (found within the START›PROGRAMS›ACCESSORIES›SYSTEM TOOLS. If not installed see you Windows documentation); and,
  3. \Program: contains all application files.

A new icon appears on the desktop as a shortcut to the programme.

After CFAMS (ver 3.0) has been installed, move the saved MUSEUM.DB file back into its original location (C:\MUSEUM\DATABASE folder). Click YES when prompted to overwrite the existing file.

Located on the Distribution CD-ROM is a folder, \Publications, which contains most applicable CF Museum publications in self-extricating format.

Service Support Request (SSR) form for CFAMS as well as other pertinent information (including future updates) will be made available through this site.
