For immediate release

Lennox Island First Nation, PEI - Gail Shea, Member of Parliament for Egmont and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, today attended the official opening of the newly renovated Lennox Island First Nation Health Centre.

The major renovation of the facility is the result of a $1.1 million investment from Health Canada.

"Our Government is committed to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of First Nations communities," said Minister Shea.  "We are honoured to be a part of today's celebration and to have provided financial support for this major health facility renovation."

"Today we are making history," said Matilda Ramjattan Chief of Lennox Island First Nation. "Officially opening the doors of a brighter more modern Health Centre means we can provide our community with better access to excellent health care programs and services. On behalf of Lennox Island First Nation, I want to thank all - particularly Health Canada - involved with the centre renovation."

The newly renovated health centre will continue to provide a variety of health services through programming related to community health nursing, maternal child health and healthy childhood development, communicable disease control, health promotion and disease prevention, and mental health and addictions.

The facility will be operated by the Lennox Island First Nation, a community of about 440 residents.
