The Inspiration

The passion that ignited Rick Hansen's dream to raise global support for spinal cord injury research through a historic 40,000 km journey around the world from 1985-87 was a powerful source of inspiration when the Royal Canadian Mint was challenged to craft the Rick Hansen Medals for the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay.

The Royal Canadian Mint produces medals and medallions for many occasions including military decorations, achievement awards and sporting events. From the same Ottawa facility responsible for medals of the Canadian Forces, the RCMP and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, the Mint has designed and handcrafted a sterling silver Rick Hansen Medal.

Retracing a Canadian Journey – August 24, 2011 to May 22, 2012

During the silver anniversary of the Man in Motion Tour, over 7,000 volunteer Medal-Bearers will carry the Rick Hansen Medal – in relay fashion – as it makes its way across Canada. As the Medal-Bearers run, walk or wheel though through over 600 communities and across 12,000 kilometres, they will retrace Rick's entire Canadian journey. In doing so, Canadians from coast to coast will be able to celebrate this milestone.

Making a Difference

Every Medal-Bearer will receive their own medal to permanently remember the way in which they personally added to the momentum of the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. Skilfully crafted, each medal represents a powerful symbol of Rick Hansen and his commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
