Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador Program

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador Program will welcome its next two participants in May of 2013. A Canada-wide search was held to build on the legacy of this year’s first-ever youth ambassadors program for the world’s longest-running national parks service. This program puts into action the commitment made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in July 2011 to start a national youth outreach program for Canada’s treasured places.

The Youth Ambassador program offers two young Canadians a full time summer job and the opportunity to meet and interact with people their age and share their excitement and interest for the environment, history, and culture, and to live new challenges not found anywhere else. They will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn new career-building skills and to visit and have fun exploring and living in some of Parks Canada’s most interesting and beautiful places. Using social media and face to face meetings they will share these experiences with young Canadians to encourage them to get out and visit and partake in the many activities offered in these places. To view some of the adventures of the first youth ambassadors visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/youthambassadors.

Parks Canada is partnering with Global Vision to help recruit the youth Ambassadors for this new flagship youth initiative. Global Vision is a respected non-profit organization which has been developing young Canadians into global leaders since 1991. They have an established record for engaging Canadian youth and supporting the development of these youth.

Global Vision holds information sessions at universities, colleges, aboriginal friendship centres and other youth focussed organizations across Canada for young Canadians who are looking for new challenges. Youth who are interested in becoming a Parks Canada Youth Ambassador can visit www.globalvision.ca to learn more about their Global Leader Centre programs, the first step to apply to become the next Parks Canada youth ambassadors. Interested individuals will be invited to apply to attend one of upcoming regional Global Leader Centre programs. Participants will then be invited to apply to the Parks Canada Youth Ambassador Program. Individuals who have participated in one of the Global Leader Centre programs held since February 2012 may also apply for the youth ambassador positions. Parks Canada will interview the top ranked applicants and choose two to be the Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors.

Parks Canada is looking for young Canadians who can inspire and lead and who will share their experiences to create a national conversation about Canada’s treasured places. Interested applicants must demonstrate leadership, good citizenship, community involvement, and an ability to find creative and innovative ways to engage their peers. This year’s youth ambassadors will build on the work done by the first two youth ambassadors to get young Canadians out and experiencing adventure in the incredible places in their own country where they live, work and play. The Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors will start their year in May 2013. As full-time summer student employees, the Youth Ambassadors will connect youth from where they are, to the places that represent the very essence of being Canadian. The two selected candidates will also work part-time through the school year.

In July 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador program as a legacy to commemorate the first visit to Canada by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Youth Ambassador Program is one of a number of initiatives by which Parks Canada is working to connect youth to Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. Other programs include My Parks Pass, Xplorers and social media.
