HSMBC Biographies

Mr. Kenn Harper of Iqaluit, Nunavut

A long-time resident of Canada’s North, Mr. Harper brings his professional experience and extensive knowledge of Inuit and Arctic history to his three-year term on the HSMBC. Fluent in English and Inuktituk, this businessman, researcher and writer has written extensively on Inuit culture, history and language. Among other publications, Mr. Harper is the author of “Give Me My Father’s Body: The Life of Minik, the New York Eskimo” and writes a weekly history column called Taissumani (Inuktitut for “long ago”) for Nunatsiaq News, an online publication for Nunavut residents. An active member of his community, Mr. Harper has served on a number of boards, including as President of the Nunavut Health Foundation, Honourary Danish Consul for Nunavut, and as a member of the Iqaluit Chamber of Commerce and the Nunavut Historical Advisory Board.

Mr. Leonard Cusack of Emyvale, Prince Edward Island

Mr. Cusack received a B.A. (Honours) in History from St. Dunstan’s University, a B.Ed. from the University of Prince Edward Island, and an M.A. in Canadian History from the University of New Brunswick. He has been a sessional lecturer on Canadian History at the University of Prince Edward Island since 1973. Prior to his retirement from the Public Service in 2005, he was the Access and Privacy Coordinator for the Province for five years. His research interests are in political and social history in 20th-century Canada. Mr. Cusack has been a member of the HSMBC since 2006 and will continue to add his invaluable knowledge, dedication and expertise to the Board’s work during this three-year term.

Mr. Lorne Wheeler of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

Mr. Wheeler earned bachelor degrees in education and history from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He taught high school history and occupied a number of high school administrative positions from 1955 to 1980, before serving as Assistant Deputy Minister with the Department of Education in 1980 and as the Deputy Minister of Education from 1985 to 1989. A past President of the Newfoundland Teacher’s Association, Mr. Wheeler continues to be actively involved with the Association as an honorary member. A member of the HSMBC since 2008, and now reappointed to a four-year term, Mr. Wheeler’s extensive knowledge of Canadian history and genuine interest will continue to be an asset in his role as Board representative for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Dr. Harold D. Kalman of Vancouver, British Columbia

A heritage consultant and principal at Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Ltd. since 1984, Dr. Kalman earned a Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University (1971). He has extensive experience in the conservation and development of historic sites and structures throughout Canada and abroad, the development of historic sites, cultural resource inventories, and urban planning. His research interests are in the history of architecture in Canada and he has published more than a dozen books on this topic, including the definitive work A History of Canadian Architecture in two volumes. He is the recipient of three City of Vancouver Heritage Awards (one in 1994 and two in 1999), the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize for History (1995) and the British Columbia Heritage Award, (2006). He is engaged in a number of professional associations including the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals, ICOMOS Canada, and the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada.
