Realizing the Uncommon Potential of the Rideau Canal Heritage Corridor

What is being proposed?
A partnership initiative that will engage the broad community to develop new experience concepts that will create a base for collaboration and action aimed at enhancing the financial sustainability of the Rideau Canal and adjacent communities.

Who is leading this?
A partnering committee has been struck for this project and includes Parks Canada, the Rideau Roundtable, the Rideau Heritage Route Tourism Association, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Lanark County, the Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation and the Town of Smiths Falls.

What will it look like?
This project will have several phases:
1. A broad engagement of the general public who are interested in sharing their innovative ideas for new land-based experiences, new water-based experiences, or innovative ways we can develop key properties to enhance the corridor and its communities.
2. A Visitor Experience Opportunities Concept which will brainstorm exploration themes and experience opportunities for “Rideau guests” to better connect with the natural and cultural heritage of this special place; and how “Rideau hosts” can enhance and innovate their facilitation of their guest’s enjoyment and appreciation of this world heritage destination. This will occur through a series of six meetings involving key innovators who will envision an outline of what could be.
3. A series of public feedback meetings to share the results of our collective work and discuss next steps.
4. Implementation of ideas and initiatives, some actions “doable” immediately (simple innovations and enhancements), some in the first few years and some when opportunity permits.

When will all this start?
The broad engagement will begin shortly in late September and continue through the end of October overlapping with the visitor experience opportunity concept meetings which will all take place in October. All this information will be compiled and ready to share in public feedback meetings in January with a view to beginning implementation of some initiatives immediately. The results will be immediately relevant to business owners, communities, and government departments.

What is the ultimate outcome for this project?
All the partners involved in this project are committed to seeing the Rideau Corridor, our special place, become a world class destination for explorers seeking to immerse in the distinctive natural and cultural landscapes of the Rideau Canal World Heritage Site and its communities.
