Government of Canada Supports the Preservation of History and Culture at St. James United Church National Historic Site of Canada

Montreal, Quebec, January 14, 2013 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, Minister of State (Agriculture) and Regional Minister for Quebec, today announced an invstment by the Government of Canada for the conservation of St. James United Church National Historic Site of Canada. Located on Sainte Catherine Street West in downtown Montreal, Quebec, this vast stone structure was built at the end of the 19th Century. It is a perfect example of the High Victorian Gothic Revival style which stands out through its rich, exterior polychrome masonry and its highly developed plaster ceilings.

“Our government has taken a leadership role in the protection and promotion of Canada's invaluable and irreplaceable historical heritage such as the St. James United Church National Historic Site,” said Minister Paradis. “The funding granted will allow future generations to visit this institution, a well integrated model in its community which plays an essential role in the education and spiritual development of its members.”

Through Parks Canada’s National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $100,000 for the purposes of preserving and stabilizing the fragile masonry of the walls as well as the buttress located at the back of St. James United Church.

“One of our government’s major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada’s national treasures,” said Minister Kent. “Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage.”

“Without this contribution, we would not be able to initiate the necessary restoration work,” said Mr. Allen R. Fuller, Director of the St. James United Church restoration project. “Parks Canada's involvement in this great adventure has given us the strength to move forward and pursue our actions in the community for which we improved the safety at the site, continue helping disadvantaged people and hold various cultural activities.”

The Cost-Sharing Program reflects the Government of Canada’s dedication to protect Canada’s heritage through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites. Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada’s historic and natural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
