Government of Canada Supports the Preservation of History and Culture at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception National Historic Site of Canada

Guelph, Ontario, January 16, 2013 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Peter Braid, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, today announced an investment by the Government of Canada in the conservation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception National Historic Site of Canada. The Church, whose large twin towers were inspired by medieval cathedrals of France, is an exceptional example of the High Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style.

“The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception has a rich history and is very important to the residents of Guelph,” said Mr. Braid. “I am pleased that this investment will help preserve this magnificent spiritual and cultural centre.”

Through Parks Canada’s National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $96,365 to support the conservation of five threatened stained glass windows located along the south nave wall of the Church.

“Our government has taken a leadership role in the protection and promotion of Canada’s invaluable heritage,” said Minister Kent. “This new funding will help to ensure that Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception National Historic Site remains a legacy to be enjoyed by future generations of Canadians.”

“Over the last several years we have undergone a needs assessment study in order to restore and maintain the Church for future generations,” said Father Dennis Noon, Pastor of the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. “Our Lady Immaculate Church is very appreciative of the interest and on-going support of Parks Canada in the restoration of our historical church, which celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2013.”

The Cost-Sharing Program reflects the Government of Canada’s dedication to protect Canada’s heritage through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites. We are pleased to continue our efforts to ensure that Canada’s historic and natural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
