Canadian cultural icon commemorated at plaque unveiling ceremony

Toronto, Ontario, February 21, 2013 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. John Carmichael, Member of Parliament for Don Valley West, today unveiled a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque commemorating the national historic significance of Glenn Gould. A special ceremony was held in Toronto at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts to celebrate the musical icon.

“Glenn Gould opened doors to an unconventional musical world,” said Mr. Carmichael. “An iconic figure of Canadian art and media, Mr. Gould bequeathed Canadians an innovative and brilliant body of work. His contribution enriches our cultural landscape.”

A pianist of prodigious talent and originality, Glenn Gould is recognized internationally as one of the great classical musicians of the 20^th century. He was known for innovation outside of standard piano repertoire and for flouting conventional musical interpretations. By the mid 60’s his rise to prominence in the concert hall soon gave way to a diverse career in recording and writing until his untimely death in 1982. When he died, Gould was reputed to be one of the world’s premier musicians despite his absence from the concert stage. Since then his international following has not diminished but expanded; his ideas continue to inspire new generations in Canada and abroad.

“The Government of Canada is honoured to commemorate the national historic significance of Glenn Gould, a true Canadian and innovator,” said Minister Kent. “He captivated audiences at home and abroad with his unique sound. His musical contributions add richness to our national identity.”

The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada was established in 1919 and is supported by Parks Canada. It advises the Minister of the Environment regarding the national significance of places, persons and events that have marked Canada’s history. On behalf of the people of Canada, Parks Canada manages a nationwide network that makes up a rich tapestry of Canada’s historical heritage and offers the public opportunities for real and inspiring discoveries.
