The Landscape of Grand Pré View Park Officially Opens to the Public

Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, July 5, 2013 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, today officially opened the Landscape of Grand Pré View Park.

“The Landscape of Grand Pré View Park will be a lasting legacy for the descendants of the New England Planters, the local, Mik’maq, and Acadian communities in recognition of their exceptional support throughout the UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination process,” said Minister Kent. “The Government of Canada is pleased that this piece of land, and the views of Grand-Pré National Historic Site and of the larger World Heritage Site, will be protected and will allow future generations of Canadians and visitors from around the world to enjoy and connect to the rich heritage of this area.”

The new View Park is located on Old Post Road and provides commanding views of the Grand Pré cultural landscape. The purchase of the land and creation of the View Park were made possible through cooperation from a host of partners including: Parks Canada, Nomination Grand Pré, the Municipality of the County of Kings, and members of the local and Acadian communities.

“The creation of this View Park has truly been a government-community collaboration, and ensures an ideal location to learn about and enjoy the exceptional features of the Grand Pré landscape,” said Mr. Kerr. “This View Park is another example of the exceptional results that are possible when the Government of Canada works with stakeholders and partners to protect and present Canada`s treasures for the enjoyment and appreciation of future generations.”

In June 2012, the Landscape of Grand Pré was inscribed as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization`s (UNESCO) World Heritage Site for its Outstanding Universal Value.
“The opening of this View Park makes it possible to fully appreciate the beauty and rich history to this remarkable Landscape,” said Claude DeGrâce, Co-Chair of the Landscape of Grand Pré Society. “The Landscape of Grand Pré holds special meaning to the Mik’maq, the Acadians and today’s inhabitants of this special place who, with the support of various government agencies, are now working together to ensure the preservation of the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site”.
Parks Canada is committed to the ongoing management of the Landscape of Grand Pré View Park and will continue to cooperate with members of the local and Acadian communities to explore future development of the site, and looks forward to welcoming visitors to this new facility.
