Small parts in toys

Don't risk it

Small objects present choking, ingestion and inhalation hazards to young children. Any toy likely to be used by a child under three years old should be large -- with no small, detachable parts when used in a reasonable, foreseeable way.

Common toy hazards

  • Puzzles with small pieces
  • Puzzles with small pegs
  • Dolls, plush toys and soft toys with small attachments (e.g., eyes, noses, decorations)
  • Rattles and other toys for young children made of brittle plastic
  • Toys with battery compartments that do not close securely
