Genital herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause painful sores on and around the genital area. It can be transmitted during sex even if your partner has no sores or symptoms of infection. There is no cure, but medication can help ease symptoms.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) (commonly known as “the clap”) that can cause sterility. It is transmitted through sex and can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is transmitted through sex and can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth. Although less common, it can be transmitted through injection drug use or through broken skin on the body.

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is caused by the same type of bacteria that causes chlamydia but is a different strain. LGV can lead to serious health problems, including extensive scarring and damage/destruction of the genitals and anus/rectum.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada. It is transmitted through sex and can be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth. When left untreated, it can lead to painful health problems and sterility.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

It is estimated that as many as 75% of sexually active men and women will have at least one HPV infection in their lifetime but many people with healthy immune systems will eventually clear the infection from their bodies.
