Question

How do I find out about Money Orders?

  • You have received a postal Money Order and want to know how to cash it.
  • You have sent a postal Money Order and want to know if it has been cashed.
  • You have purchased a Money Order, but no longer require it and would like to cancel it.

Answer

Postal Money Orders can be cashed at any Canada Post outlet or financial institution (please note that some financial institutions may charge a fee for this).

A Money Order can only be cashed by the person who is named in the payee portion of the form. You will be asked to show government issued photo identification.

Unlike a cheque, a Money Order cannot be cancelled. If you have the Money Order and are the registered purchaser, you may cash the Money Order yourself. If you have already sent your Money Order we suggest that you ask the receiver to refuse it or return it to you. You can then cash it at any Post Office or financial institution.
