  • For this collectible OFDC, Paprika in Montreal worked with photos and illustration to capture the focus and precision of curling.
  • The domestic stamp image features an illustration by Louis Hébert based off a photo taken by Michael Burns.
  • Schmirler, wearing the colours of Canada, releases the curling stone down the ice.
  • The front of the envelope shows a photo of Schmirler taken by Michael Burns at the World Curling Championships in Bern, Switzerland in April, 1997.
  • The back of the envelope provides an overview of Schmirler's many accomplishments and another portrait by Michael Burns.

BACKGROUND

  • Born in Biggar, SK, Sandra Schmirler grew up a sport fan and quickly fell in love with curling.
  • “Schmirler the Curler” was part of several teams before skipping her own in the early 1990s—the path to many victories.
  • Schmirler captured 3 Canadian Curling Championships and 3 World Curling Championships.
  • She skipped Team Canada to a gold medal at the Nagano1998 Olympic Winter Games, the first year curling was an official medal sport.
  • Schmirler died of cancer in 2000 after a heroic fight against the illness. She remains sorely missed in Saskatchewan, amongst the curling community and across Canada.
  • Her memory lives on through the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
