  • A close-up photo of the athlete, taken by Nathan Bilow, illustrates the back cover of the booklet.
  • This picture was taken at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado in January, 2009, where Burke won the Women's Superpipe—her 3rd Winter X Games gold.
  • The stamp booklet includes a bio, so that you can learn more about this fearless athlete and the legacy of firsts she achieved in women’s skiing.

BACKGROUND

  • A native of Barrie, ON, Sarah Burke grew up in Midland and later moved to Squamish, BC, to pursue a career as a professional skier.
  • Burke topped every major freestyle skiing podium around the world. She was a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist, and won the world championship in the half-pipe in 2005.
  • The charismatic athlete successfully lobbied to have half-pipe skiing included in the Olympic Winter Games. It will make its debut at Sochi 2014 in Russia.
  • Burke shared her passion with the next generation of skiers as a coach, mentor and all-round inspiration.
  • Tragically, she suffered a serious accident during a training session. She succumbed to her injuries on January 19, 2012, leaving a legacy of firsts in freestyle skiing.
