The Reckoning of Violet Jessop at the Maritime Museum

Based on the memoirs of Violet Jessop, this play is the true story of an unsinkable woman, a survivor of Titanic and other disasters. This play is written by and stars Jenny Abel, is directed by Tim Sutherland and presented by Tidal Muse Theatre at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The Reckoning of Violet Jessop is based on the true story of a woman who survived disasters on all three White Star sister ships, Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. Facing the new prospect of land-locked existence after 42 years of service at sea as a stewardess, Violet must now come to terms with her past before embracing her new life.

BACKGROUND

Jenny first played Violet Jessop in 2007 at the Royal BC Museum’s Titanic Exhibit where she shared Violet’s stories with up to 6000 visitors a day for five months. When that contract finished she decided to write a one woman show based on Violet’s life. Many drafts later, she now has a one-hour show with six characters, each with a different dialect. Jenny gave a reading of The Reckoning of Violet Jessop in April 2009 at Etcetera Theatre in London, England. While in England she visited Violet Jessop's grave and went to Southampton to see the location where Titanic set sail.

Jenny Abel is a Vancouver based actor, originally from Victoria. Her training was at George Brown Theater School in Toronto. She has acted in dozens of professional and independent theatre, film and TV productions. Her favourite roles thus far, besides Violet, are Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Jackie in the independent feature film Open Diaries.
