Living CMHC’s Values

We are justifiably proud of our reputation for having an ethical culture. Our reputation is built on the values our employees live by every day. As public servants, employees play an important role in serving Canadians, our communities and the public interest.

My name is Joel and I help Canadians access affordable housing.

Not everybody can afford a home. My role within assisted housing is to review social housing programs to ensure that everyone has access to a home. I enjoy the challenges that my position offers. I am constantly doing analysis on really complex problems.

I come to work everyday because I like the people that I work with. I work with a lot of like-minded individuals who are all passionate about the same things and who are trying to achieve the same goals.

The work at CMHC is also very interesting – a lot of different aspects compared to a for profit organization. We're not only looking at financial aspects, we're also looking at social and political aspects. And although it's hard work, it's really fun. It's really interesting.

When I was first hired at CMHC I was hired for the Renovation Retrofit Initiative. I was part of the Canadian Economic Action Plan. We were helping social housing groups do renovations. I was part of a team that helped approve applications for new roofs, windows, doors and at the same time we're helping the federal government with the Canadian economic action plan. It was really challenging really fun and it was also very rewarding work.

Being able to see how my role fits into CMHC's overall goals and mandate helped me the value in what I do everyday. Because what I do matters.

Because What I Do Matters

“I get to work with some really great people. CMHC has a community feel, and working with people who are supportive and who have the same goals as you do is a wonderful thing.”

— Allison, Communications Consultant, Ottawa

These are just some of the reasons why CMHC has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, one of the Top Employers in the National Capital Region and one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures.

A Community of Sharing and Recognition

Sandy is recognized for her contribution with a certificate as part of the “Thanks to You” recognition program.

We offer a respectful and inclusive, supportive work environment where you are valued and encouraged to reach your full potential. At CMHC, you are part of a community of employees who support and help one another. Recognizing employees who make a difference is an integral part of our culture.

The “Thanks To You” employee recognition program supports the timely acknowledgment of employee efforts and achievements by providing an online platform for colleagues to show their appreciation for one another under three categories:

  • Recognition of achievement
  • Recognition of service
  • Recognition at retirement

Because What I Do Matters

“Being recognized for my contributions is an intrinsic recognition that’s not connected to the year-end incentive or to the salary I receive every two weeks. It’s having that satisfaction at the end of the day that I’ve done a good job, achieved a milestone, or made a difference in a team member’s life.”

— Ranga, Human Resources Advisor, Toronto
