PM Justin Trudeau pens letter to 9-year-old Windsor girl

A basic elementary school assignment led to some correspondence with Canada's top politician â€” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Grade 4 students at Windsor's West Gate Public School were asked to write a persuasive letter to anyone in the world.

"I chose Justin Trudeau and I got a letter back, I got a response," said student Lilly Pieczonka at her home on Monday.

The 9-year-old wanted to persuade the Prime Minister to increase the legal driving age from 16 to 18 years of age.

"Because people aren't old enough and you aren't a legal adult yet," she said. "Some kids aren't that mature to drive."

Lilly said she doesn't know why she chose Ontario's legal driving age as her issue to write about, but nonetheless, her parents are both very excited she got a personalized response.

"I'm very proud of her," said Katie Pieczonka, Lilly's mom. "I'm proud that she takes these kinds of stands on things and thinks this is an important issue."

Lilly was happy to learn from Trudeau that driving is actually a provincial matter.

At the recommendation of the Prime Minister, she said she will now be writing Premier Kathleen Wynne to persuade her to make the licensing change.

Lilly said she hopes the Premier will write her back, as well.
