  • What Congress needs to deal with

The recent judgment of Italy’s Court of Appeals in the AgustaWestland bribery scandal, involving the payment of kickbacks of over Rs 350 crore to Indian politicians and officials, has brought corruption charges directly into the Gandhi household. The 225-page judgment incorporates a letter by Christian Michel, a British middleman wanted by Indian investigation agencies in the helicopter deal, referring to Sonia Gandhi as the main driving force behind the deal, and that she along with her key advisers Ahmed Patel, Manmohan Singh, Veerappa Moily and Oscar Fernades (among others) should be targeted for clinching the deal. James Christian Michel’s letter dated March 15, 2008, lends strong circumstantial evidence to the alleged role of Sonia Gandhi and her advisers in the deal.
