    Ireland's High Court issued an order on Wednesday blocking an airport strike, after Ireland's largest trade union served notice on Aer Lingus and the country's two main airport authorities that it planned a work stoppage later this week. The union, SIPTU, had called for a four-hour stoppage at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports on Friday - the start of a holiday weekend for Ireland's St Patrick's Day - over a dispute about a shortfall in the funding of staff pension schemes. Justice Paul Gilligan said he could understand workers' frustrations but agreed to grant an injunction sought by the Dublin Airport Authority to stop the shutdown.

    Lance Corporal Richard Farrell, who has been in custody at Shrewsbury police station since his arrest at the weekend, was remanded in custody until a further hearing on March 31 after making a brief appearance at Telford Magistrates' Court. The soldier is charged with killing Corporal Geoffrey McNeill, of 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment. West Mercia Police have yet to confirm the cause of Cpl McNeill's death after further tests were ordered following a post-mortem examination. The victim's brother, Jason McNeill, paid tribute to his sibling, who was born in Ballymoney, County Antrim.

The 38-year-old Northern Irish actor did so in an interview with Game of Thrones fansite WinterIsComing.net, who questioned him about the attention his character receives in the gay community. "Well, in all honesty, when you talk about 'the gay community,' you are talking about my community," he said with a laugh.

    The Financial Conduct Authority has snapped up the former chief executive at Depfa ACS Bank Ireland to become head of investment banking in its supervision division. The FCA said in a statement that she will start in early May this year and will report into Will Amos, the regulator's director of wholesale banking and investment management. "I am delighted that Julia [Hoggett] is joining us - she has a huge amount of industry experience, with an excellent understanding of financial institutions and specific investment banking experience," said Clive Adamson, director of supervision at the FCA. Hoggett moves immediately from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where she worked as a managing director on the debt capital markets desk.
