  • What Would A Rocky Exoplanet Look Like? Atmosphere Models Seek Clues

Is the atmosphere thick, or dissipating into space? As planets transit across the face of their stars, it's possible for astronomers to figure out what chemicals are contained in the planet atmospheres, and to make predictions. Francois Forget, a senior research scientist with the Meteorological Dynamics Laboratory of the Pierre Simon Laplace Institute in Paris, is part of a group trying to create a model for how planetary atmospheres behave on smaller, rocky planets like Earth, based upon observations in our own solar system. "It’s designed in a way so we can simulate, as much as we can, a planet with any kind of atmosphere around any kind of star, and with this tool explore the range of planets we can have."

  • Cheerleaders' Space Station Experiment to Grow Space History One Microbe at a Time

A very, very (very) small sample from John Glenn's 1962 Mercury capsule "Friendship 7" is set to launch to the International Space Station as part of an experiment organized by professional cheerleaders. The microbial spacecraft sample— literally, the bacteria Pantoea eucrina — is among 48 microbes swabbed from a variety of historical places (like the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum) and sports stadiums that will be compared for the rate at which they grow in space. The swabbing was led by Science Cheerleader, a group of current and former NFL and NBA cheerleaders pursuing careers in science and technology. The Project MERCCURI (or Microbial Ecology Research Combining Citizen and University Researchers) payload is launching on SpaceX's third Dragon spacecraft to resupply the space station for NASA.

Hamas personnel, including fighters, had earlier evacuated all their bases, Gaza security sources said.

  • New Zealand hikes rates for first time in three years

New Zealand's central bank lifted the official cash rate (OCR) 0.25 points to 2.75 percent on Thursday, ending a three-year interest rate freeze imposed after the devastating Christchurch earthquake. In a widely anticipated move, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand said rates no longer needed to be kept at a record low of 2.5 percent because the economy's expansion "has considerable momentum". "By increasing the OCR as needed to keep future average inflation near the 2.0 percent target mid-point, the bank is seeking to ensure that the economic expansion can be sustained," governor Graeme Wheeler said. He added: "It's also fair to say that over the next few months we will see further interest rate increases." The 6.3-magnitude Christchurch earthquake in February 2011 levelled much of New Zealand's second largest city, claiming 185 lives and prompting the Reserve Bank to slash rates in an emergency move to cushion the economy.
