Giant floor maps

Canadian Geographic Education’s giant floor map program is a free resource offered to Canadian teachers from Kindergarten to grade 12. Each floor map comes complete with a trunk of additional supplies to further enhance students’ experience including map legends, activity cards, props and more. In addition, a teacher guide with at least ten curriculum-linked activities will help bring the map to life.

Each floor map is made of heavy-stock vinyl and measures 11 m x 8 m, roughly half the size of a school’s gymnasium.

The following giant floor maps are available for booking for a three-week period loan:

• Canada from space
  This map, comprised of images taken by Canada’s RADARSAT-2, teaches students how Earth observation satellites monitor Canada’s environment, climate and borders.
• Drawn to Victory
  This map highlights not only the geographical location of the First World War but also the extent of the Western Front and major battles fought specifically highlighting battles with major involvement.
• Energy Production and Transmission
  This map gives students the chance to explore and learn Canada’s energy story, highlighting where Canada’s energy is produced and where it goes. 
• Mapping Democracy - CPAC Route 338
  With the focus on democratic literacy, this map allows students from primary to senior to explore all 338 federal ridings from coast to coast to coast.
• Ontario Parks Giant Floor Map
  Canadian Geographic Education's 10-by-10 metre Ontario Parks Giant Floor Map highlights the Ontario park system, as well as Indigenous treaty areas, highways, and urban and rural communities.
• Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada
  This map shows the locations of Indigenous communities, residential schools, reserves and more. Rather than political borders, Canada is broken up into Indigenous language groups.
• Polar Knowledge Canada
  This map looks at the world from a circumpolar perspective. Use this map to explore the Arctic region and discuss why the Arctic circumpolar region is so important.
• Re:Location
  This Giant Floor Map explores the theme of relocation in Canada from a number of perspectives.
• Vimy Ridge
  This map is a unique opportunity to explore an important moment in Canadian history through a geographic lens. The giant floor map’s 10 accompanying learning activities have students reading and interpreting trench maps, exploring the physical landscape and weather of Vimy during the battle, analyzing the role of the Canadian Corps, reflecting on war poetry and war slang, and examining the location and significance of the Vimy Memorial.

  Highlighting the major ecozones of Canada’s North, students can explore the natural diversity and history of Canada’s Arctic region.
• Natural Resources Canada
  This giant floor map celebrates the significant role GIS and geospatial technologies play in our day-to-day lives.
• Parks Canada: Places and Spaces for Everyone
  This map highlights Canada’s national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites.
