About the Registry

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry (the Registry), consisting of an Internet site and Project files, was established for the purpose of facilitating access to records related to federal environmental assessments. It is operated in a manner that provides the public with convenient and timely access to information in support of public participation.

Internet Site

The Internet site is an electronic registry that is administered by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) to facilitate online access to key information and records. It contains information about designated projects under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, including information about environmental assessments that started under the former Act and continue under the transition provisions of Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012.

Responsible authorities maintain information and post specific records for projects under their responsibility. The Registry Internet site may also include additional information and records that might assist in better informing the public about the project and its environmental effects, including contact information on how the public can obtain further information. Information posted on the Internet site is maintained by the Agency when determining whether an environmental assessment of a designated project is required; and by the responsible authority from the commencement of an environmental assessment until the environmental assessment decision is taken.

Information about environmental assessments undertaken under the former Act is publically accessible via the Canadian Environmental Assessment Archives. The Archives also contains information about completed environmental assessments for which a follow-up program may be required.

Project File

The Project File refers to all records produced, collected or received for the purpose of determining whether an environmental assessment is required and conducting the environmental assessment unless the disclosure of the information would be otherwise prohibited under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. Copies of records included in the Project File are available to members of the public upon request.

The Project File is maintained by the Agency when determining whether an environmental assessment of a designated project is required; and by the responsible authority from the commencement of an environmental assessment until the completion of any follow-up program.
