International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August)

UN Women joins indigenous peoples around the world to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This year, the day focuses on the theme “Indigenous Languages”, and calls to revitalize, preserve, and promote indigenous languages around the world. The 370 million indigenous people living across 90 countries are the custodians of the majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages. Every two weeks, an indigenous language disappears, risking the loss of indigenous cultures and knowledge.

International Youth Day (12 August)

This year’s theme, "Transforming education," highlights efforts to make education more inclusive and accessible for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves. Rooted in Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” – International Youth Day 2019 examines how Governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organizations, as well as other stakeholders, are transforming education so that it becomes a powerful tool to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Making the Grade: IAEA Tests How Well Laboratories Analyse Water

Excellent, good, questionable or unacceptable: how good is your water chemistry analysis? Scientists can find out through comparison. For the past 30 years, the IAEA has been conducting isotope hydrology interlaboratory comparisons among hundreds of laboratories and has become a global source of isotope hydrology proficiency tests. Isotope hydrologists are scientists who study water resources using isotopic data. Their studies provide critical information for developing strategies and policies to protect water.

Will Smith, globally renowned actor and a high-profile advocate for education, is among those supporting Education Cannot Wait in its efforts to mobilize $1.8 billion by 2021 to support education programmes for close to 9 million children and youth enduring the hardship of forced displacement, conflict and crisis. Last year, in partnership with Omaze, Global Citizen and the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, The Fresh Prince bungee jumped from a helicopter over the Grand Canyon on his fiftieth birthday to raise funds for the Education Cannot Wait cause. Will’s historic jump raised $746,000 from donors from 166 countries, and helped mobilize millions more through this unique partnership.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. Its next report on Climate Change and Land shows that better land management can contribute to tackling climate change, but is not the only solution. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors is essential if global warming is to be kept to well below 2ºC. Land must remain productive to maintain food security as the population increases and the negative impacts of climate change on vegetation increase. This means there are limits to the contribution of land to addressing climate change, for instance through the cultivation of energy crops and afforestation.
