Publication fees
We believe that all research should be freely available. To support this policy, authors of research papers are asked to pay a publication fee of $2,850 CDN plus applicable sales tax upon acceptance of their paper. There are no colour or page charges. At this time, we are waiving publication fees for research articles on COVID-19.
Whether an author group is able to pay the publication fee does not affect editorial decision-making. Humanities and Practice articles, including clinical images and case reports, are not subject to the publication fee.
Taxes
Author groups whose research paper is accepted, and whose corresponding author resides in Canada, must pay taxes (GST/HST) on the above-mentioned fee. The taxation rate differs per province, as follows:
5% |
AB, BC, MB, NT, NU, SK, YT |
13% |
ON |
14.975% |
QC |
15% |
NB, NL, NS, PE |
Partial or complete fees waiver
Author groups from developing countries, as determined by inclusion on the WHO Hinari list, may be eligible for a partial or complete waiver of publication fees. It is unlikely that a waiver will be granted to authors from established academic or research centres in the developed world. Author groups composed of: a) a majority of students who do not hold a doctoral degree (PhD or MD), and which b) contain a maximum of 2 PhD or MD holders, may be eligible for a discounted fee. To apply for a fee waiver, contact the editorial office before submission with your request and a complete author list, author affiliations, authors' completed degrees, funding and type of research. For more information, email editorial@cmaj.ca.
Refund policy
If for any reason (e.g., plagiarism, fraudulent data and other legal issues) during the production process the publisher decides not to publish an accepted paper, the author will be reimbursed the publication fee.
