Geography

Burwash Landing is located in the Shakwak Valley, at the foot of the Kluane Ranges and along the shores of Kluane Lake. The Shakwak Trench is a major longitudinal valley marking the Denali Fault, which runs from Haines, Alaska, to the south end of Kluane Lake and onto eastern Alaska.  The Kluane Ranges form a wall rising from the Shakwak Trench to the east marking the fault line.

Wildlife

Dall sheep, wolves and grizzly bears are relatively abundant. Swans, geese and ducks use the wetlands in the Shakwak Trench for nesting while other migratory birds use the wetlands for staging enroute to and from breeding grounds in Alaska.

Climate

During the winter, the temperatures range from mild to very cold. Typical monthly averages in January show maximums at minus 16 Celsius and minimums at minus 28 Celcius, although the temperature can fall to much lower temperatures during a very cold spell.

Summer months are mild, generally around 18 Celsius in the daytime with winds from the South.
