Population

In Dawson City, there are 1,319 (2011 Census) friendly, unique and adventure-minded individuals; the second highest population in the Yukon next to Whitehorse.

Population growth in Dawson City has remained relatively the same from the 2006 to 2011 census however, the population increases significantly in summer months due to seasonal work opportunities.

The population of the Yukon itself is growing; a population growth of 11.6% between the 2006 and 2011 census years was the highest in Canada.

Approximately 30% identify as Aboriginals, 12.5% as French-Canadians, and 36% as Europeans.  Just over half of the non-immigrant population of Dawson City was born outside of the Territory.

Labour Force

The main employers in Dawson City are with government: federal, territorial, First Nation and municipal. Tourism plays a significant role in the employment sector in the services industry, along with employment opportunities in placer and hard rock mining.

Tourism and mining tend to be seasonal by nature and a large number of seasonal workers relocate to Dawson City during the summer months. The retail trade and construction industry follow on from these main industries.

The people of Dawson City are adaptable, creative, entrepreneurial and innovative. Yukon has one of the highest university degree per capita ratios in Canada and a high rate of high school completion. All this makes for a skookum labour force (skookum: used locally to mean impressive, exceptional and genuinely cool).
