The self-governing First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun represents the most northerly community of the Northern Tutchone language and culture group. Historically, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun lived and trapped throughout the area surrounding Mayo.
The First Nation has been actively involved in affairs of the Mayo community, promoting a better, healthier lifestyle for its future generations and a strong economy based on its rich natural resources.
The Mayo Arts Festival began in 2002 and has grown into a much anticipated yearly festival. The festival showcases artists and musicians around the Mayo area.
There are many heritage buildings in Mayo including the Binet House Interpretative Center, and Christ the King Church, Saint Mary’s with Saint Mark’s church, and the Mable McIntyre house.
The Silver Trail scenic drive winds its way to Mayo passing through moose habitat and offering beautiful views of the Stewart River. At the end of the Silver Trail is Keno City, Yukon’s colourful frontier mining town. Keno City today is a quiet community with a cluster of buildings and home to an eclectic mix of artists, miners and old timers with fewer than 20 full-time residents.
